Soundbyte, a dual winner at Brighton, had gone up 13lb since his handicap debut and was trying a new trip. He was held up at the back before picking his way through the field in the straight and was running on strongly in the closing stages. He looks one to keep on the right side on this evidence.
Neve Lieve has been progressing with racing and stayed 2m when winning last time. She was ridden positively and, striking for home early in the straight, stretched her rivals, only to be run down late on by two progressive types.
Sleepy Hollow, another stepping up in trip and racing off his highest mark, travelled well and had every chance in the last quarter-mile, only to fade slightly inside the final furlong. He may have not quite got home this time, but should last the trip next year when more mature.
Cape Tribulation, a dual 2m bumper winner, had scored over 1m2f on his second start on the Flat but stamina was not in doubt on this handicap debut. He moved up to chase the leading group going into the final two furlongs, but did not quite have the pace to reach the leaders. He looks an interesting prospect for novice hurdles if connections opt for that route.
Haarth Sovereign moved up to have his chance at the two-furlong pole before fading, and has yet to score on turf. Course specialist Red Wine was held up at the rear by his apprentice jockey before staying on strongly under hands-and-heels riding. This is his style of racing, though, and, in reasonable heart at present, he could well take his chance in the November Handicap, which he won way back in 2002.
Tritonville Lodge, better known as a staying hurdler, has put up a couple of promising runs on the Flat of late and ran well over a trip arguably short of his best. He got outpaced early in the straight before staying on again.
These were clear of the remainder, who included favourite Minkowski. The former French-trained gelding was close enough halfway up the straight before weakening and has something to prove.
*Lough Diver was reported to be unsuited by the going. [AR]
