Analyis of the race

Plenty of well-bred fillies from powerful connections and this looked a potentially decent maiden, although a winning time 2.67sec slower than the following nursery tempers enthusiasm somewhat. The extremely well-bred LEOCORNO, a half-sister to the top-class Golan as well as this year's Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer, was easy to back on-course but still proved good enough to make a winning debut. The effort is even more creditable than the bare result suggests, as she was behind a wall of horses early in the straight and had to be continually switched while trying to make ground. She was finally in the clear just over a furlong out and stayed on impressively to reel in Queen Eleanor, who had travelled as well as anything. A rangy filly with plenty of scope, the winner rates a very exciting three-year-old prospect and was given a quote of 16-1 for the Oaks by Blue Square. Her sire Pivotal has a ten per cent strike-rate with his runners over 1m4f-plus in Britain and Ireland, compared with 14 per cent over shorter, but there is enough stamina on the dam's side of her pedigree to think she will have no problems with middle-distances.

Queen Eleanor caught the eye first time out when running on late in a Polytrack maiden at Lingfield and confirmed the promise with a good run behind the potentially smart winner. She travelled well for much of the way and did nothing wrong, but was simply beaten by a better one on the day.

Sweet Hollow, a 46,000gns half-sister to French 2,000 Guineas winner Victory Note, ran green and gave the impression she will be a lot better for the experience.

Teeky, a half-sister to Sleeping Indian, had been off the track since running below expectations when 3-1 joint favourite at Yarmouth in July. She looked as though the run would do her good, but this was still an improvement and there should be much better to come again.

Waheeba improved on the form of her first two efforts and has the scope to make a fair handicapper. Silken Promise showed ability on this debut for a stable not in the best of form, and this was also a reasonable first effort from Marillos Proterras, who ended up out very wide.

Aim To Achieve, a 190,000 euros daughter of Galileo, did not impress on the way to post and she was very slow to find her stride when the stalls opened, being last away and driven along. She eventually tagged on to the main group, but was in trouble over three furlongs out.

*Aim To Achieve was reported to be lame on her off-hind*. [RW]
