Barney McGrew proved difficult to load despite the aid of a blanket, but with the ground in his favour he did nothing wrong in the race and finished best of those racing on the far side of the track, despite having no chance with the winner.
Lipocco has not won since May 2007 and is still 9lb above his last winning mark. Fitted with first-time cheekpieces, he made the running and ran well enough, although he had nothing in reserve when the winner swept past.
Cute Ass, who was Group placed as a juvenile, has been struggling for form this season but had dropped 10lb in handicap since her return to action and this was more encouraging.
Burning Incense, a stable companion of the runner-up, would have preferred more cut in the ground but, having not won for over two years, at last looks to be back on a competitive mark and the reapplied cheekpieces seemed to help.
The favourite Musaalem, having his first run since July, got a good tow from Lipocco but found very little under pressure.
