This race often goes to an improving type and it did so again with MESHTRI putting up a game performance under a typically astute Philip Robinson ride. This lightly-raced course winner, whose only previous try at this trip was on soft ground, got it well enough and battled on too strongly for the somewhat reluctant second.
Buddhist Monk was settled in the rear before being produced with a run down the outside in the straight, tactics that worked so well at Kempton on his previous start. However, he ducked left under pressure and, carrying his head high, looked less than willing in the closing stages. He may not have quite got home over this longer trip but it would be no surprise if some form of headgear was employed before long.
Jagger has been in reasonable form of late and, on his favourite sound surface with cheekpieces back on, he ran a creditable race, staying on as if he would not mind a return to 2m.
Dzesmin ran another decent race but isarguably best at 1m4f on a turning track and was 6lb higher than his last winning mark.
Double Banded moved up looking a big threat early in the straight but was beginning to tread water when the runner-up hung across him.
Always Bold racedclose to the leaders throughout but was unable to respond as the pace quickened early in the straight before staying on again in the closing stages.
Ozone Trustee, who beat Buddhist Monk on his seasonal debut, was far too keen early on this big step up in trip.
