A big field of mostly exposed sprinters here, but the one exception was the three-year-old Without Prejudice, who was running in a handicap for the first time following three outings in maiden company, including a success at Lingfield last time when he did not have to come off the bridle to beat a couple of moderate rivals. A son of Johannesburg who cost a fair few quid, his position in the market suggested that there were plentyof people who though he was well handicapped off a mark of 74.
He was disappointing, though, and the race went to FANTASY EXPLORER, who has been raced predominantly over the minimum trip in the past but who had no trouble seeing the extra furlong out on this fast ground. He tends to run well at Newmarket and was certainly entitled to win from a handicapping point of view, as he had dropped to a mark 1lb lower than when last successful. A heritage handicap at Musselburgh next month could now be on his agenda.
Resplendent Alpha does not find winning easy but he had conditions to suit and ran a solid race in second. Any further rise in the handicap is going to see him remain vulnerable, though.
Johannes proved hard to settle in the early stages but he came from off the pace to take fourth and is on a fair mark these days. His last win came over three years ago, though.
Mogok Ruby, who ran well in the greys' race on the July course last time out, again shaped encouragingly. His form on Polytrack is slightly better than on turf so he will be interesting when returning to the all-weather.
Forest Dane had not run since May but that was not a concern because he has won after a long absence before. He did not get the best of luck in running but was staying on at the finish, and is another who will no doubt soon be embarking on another all-weather campaign.
