The pace seemed reasonable, but the eventual runner-up was left alone up front and veryfew were ever seriously involved. They raced up the middle of the track early, but were edging across to the stands' side late on.
ALAZEYAB, who carried Hamdan Al Maktoum's second colours, had a tongue-tie on for the first time and improved on theform he showed when sixth in a good maiden over this trip at Sandown on his debut. He was always well placed towards the far side of the main group and, after coming off the bridle well over 2f out, stayed on best to run out a decisive winner.
His dam, although by Green Desert, stayed 1m4f, and this one will soon want further than this 7f. He is entered in both the Dewhurst and Racing Trophy, so is clearly very well regarded, and deserves his chance in something better now.
King's Sabre improved massively on the form he showed when beaten 15 lengths in a Polytrack maiden at 66-1 on his debut. However, while he clearly has plenty of ability, it must be noted that he was allowed a very easy lead.
Holyrood has not progressed as expected since running fourth in a hot maiden at the July course on his debut. Having been a beaten favourite at Goodwood last time, he again ran below market expectations, plugging on at one pace after coming under pressure a fair way out. However, he can be expected to improve significantly when stepped up to middle-distances next year - he is by Falbrav, out of a Shirley Heights mare - and is now qualified for a handicap mark.
Roger Charlton won this race with Trade Fair in 2002 and Proponent in 2006, but Block Party, having travelled well to point, did not really pick up.
Durgan was only a length and a half behind today's winner at Sandown on his debut, but that one has clearly made more improvement.
Above Average, a 70,000 euros son of High Chaparral, out of a 6f juvenile winner, made a pleasing debut. He was well off the pace for much of the way, but made some encouraging late headway without being given an unnecessarily hard time and should be a lot better for the run. He could live up to his name in time.
That one's stablemate, Legislate, needed a blanket for stalls entry and was reluctant to load. He was never seen with a chance but should learn from the whole experience.
Although never involved, both Netta and Blue Tango showed ability and will have learned from this, while Silverglas ran well for a long way.
Eastern Empire was reported to have suffered interference in running.[RW]
