In all likelihood this isn't a maiden hurdle that will live long in the memory, and included a couple of horses who wouldn't be entirely straightforward.

BASKERVILLE jumped quite well and just about managed to hold on. Held up in mid-division early, he made quite good ground to assume a more prominent position coming down the hill and a good jump at the last cemented a couple of lengths lead, which was vital.

South Wing missed a winning opportunity here. Having tracked the early pace, a slow jump at the first flight in the back straight knocked him back a few places and he lost further ground before suddenly coming back on the bridle and closing again coming down the hill. He came under pressure before two out, but stayed on all the way tothe line and another stride would have seen him get up.

Favourite Farinelli wouldn't settle early on, but closed up entering the straight and travelled very much like the winner at the second-last, but he couldn't find anything once asked a serious question.

They finished clear of Neelloc, who raced in rear and made some modest headway in the straight to be never nearer. [JOH]
