The winner had shaped promisingly on his career debut and any improvement on that effort appeared to be good enough here. After having to overcome a wide starting position from stall 17, the winner was settled in mid-division by Johnny Murtagh and while he was starting to come under pressure over 2f out, it was from this point that he made his challenge and once vying for the lead at the 1f marker, he always looked likely to come out on top.
On evidence of this, the winner will have no trouble in stepping up to one mile in the future and that was the opinion of his pleased trainer afterwards. Westphalia was cut from 33-1 into 16-1 by Boylesports and introduced at 33-1 by William Hill for the 2009 Stan James 2,000 Guineas and at this early stage, he certainly looks the number one Ballydoyle contender for that Classic.
The runner-up Douze Points showed considerable improvement from his sixth-placed effort on his Leopardstown debut and the more positive ride here certainly benefited John Murphy's charge's cause. This looks a smart effort and proof of that is the fact that he was five lengths clear of the third-placed horse.
The fourth and fifth-placed Palazzone and Kilmagner bothran very similar races having travelled well to the 2f marker, with the former staying on the better of the pair.
The well-bred Ajsaam was making his first start but after tracking the winner up to 3f out, his challenge faltered from there onwards. Finsceal Beo's connections relied on newcomer John Veale and he raced prominently until giving way over 2f out, while the apparent Ballydoyle second-string here was Born To Be King, a Storm Cat colt out of the Classic-placed Quarter Moon, and as expected, he was doing his best work in the closing stages without ever threatening.[RC]
