Analyis of the race

A fairly dramatic start to the meeting as first-past-the-post Tomas An Tsioda was disqualified. He travelled well throughout, but once coming there to challenge a furlong and a half out, the horse proceeded to shift markedly to his left and collided with eventual third Drumbeat and badly squeezed out RIP VAN WINKLE. Once straightened up, Tomas An Tsioda ran on well all the way to the line but would have been caught in another half-stride as the Ballydoyle colt flew home once switched to the outside. Jim Bolger does have a very high opinion of Tomas An Tsioda, though, who he believes can only improve.

Rip Van Winkle was a very unlucky loser and deserved to get the race. A son of Galileo, he was very green indeed and had to manoeuvre off the rail to get a run before the race-changing incident a furlong and a half out. When getting daylight he ran around for a few strides before powering home inside the last half-furlong. He looks to be a juvenile of considerable ability and, with this experienceunder his belt, he could be capable of big things.

His stable companion, Montjeu colt Drumbeat, looks to have some potential as well, and appeared to be a bit more professional. He had a good position more or less throughout and did get a bump from the first past the post in the incident when his stablemate was squeezed up. It didn't make any difference to his finishing position, though, but he ran on well inside the last and should have little trouble in picking up a maiden.

Even with the experience of a run behind him, Born To Rock ran green enough and should improve a good bit. He received a bit of a bump when the eventual winner made his move off the rail and could not get any closer after that, plus he carried his head to one side.

Favourite Alyazwa tracked the early pace and was just being asked a question to get a bit closer when he was squeezed up by the eventual winner moving off the rail. He couldn't recover after that and wasn't hard-ridden subsequently. [JOH]
