Despite winning twice in his last three outings, RICKARDSTOWN was sent off a 12-1 chance here, but showed his battling qualities to fine effect to hold off the late challenges of both Finns Cross and Swiss Cottage.
This was a step up on what Rickardstown had previously done, winning from 3lb out of the handicap, and connections are now hoping to line up a tilt at one of the big prizes at Galway.
Finns Cross had returned from a break when finishing third at Listowel earlier in the month and he showed the benefit from that outing to be a fast-finishing second afterseeming to get outpaced on the descent to the straight. He looked to be reeling in the winner after jumping the last, but Rickardstown pulled out more on the run-in.
Swiss Cottage looked the most likely winner for most of the way up the straight before giving way to the first two. This was another good effort, and he's likely to pick up a nice prize before long.
Rathmore Castle put up a highly encouraging performance before getting outpaced from three out. He clearly prefers a stiffer test than he experienced here, and connections were highly satisfied with this effort.
Power Elite raced more prominently than he had at Roscommon two weeks earlier, and was still going well in front turning into the straight. He could be on his way back to form.
Pillar Of Hercules went off a solid favourite on the back of his two comfortable wins at Wexford and Limerick. He was at the head of affairs until the third-last before dropping off. It was found that he was lame after the race.[RC]
