Slippers Madden showed the Flat boys how to do it as he bounced his filly out in front and never saw another rival. She gradually wound it up and was never further clear than at the finish. It was astonishing improvement from a filly who had managed to finish in the first ten once in three previous starts.
The stewards inquired into the improvement in form and trainer Maura McGuinness reported that the fast ground, the drop in trip and the change in riding tactics all contributed to the improvement. The explanation was noted.
Morrigan was a potential improver, having not been disgraced on her one previous start last season. She tracked the winner the whole way and closed to within a length at the top of the straight. That was as close as she got. Her main chance of winning probably will come with a handicap mark.
Fay Street has gone down fighting in the past, but there wasn't even a trace of that in a lifeless display. He was being pushed to stay in touch coming down the hill and only briefly looked as though he was going to challenge 2f out. He was well below his best but he will never get a better chance
.Tipples Mate showed a bit behind Mourinho at the Curragh last time but didn't run up to that form here. Held up early, she made no progress of any note until it was too late.
