The pound overweight put up by the rider of the runner-up Oasis Davis did nothing to help his cause, as things turned out. He broke well and was content to track the leader most of the way. Once taking it up less than two furlongs out, he responded well and ran on strongly on the inside rail. However, the best horse did seem to win.
Scopey ran a race full of promise on his seasonal debut. Neverinvolved initially, he stayed on strongly from a good bit back inside the last furlong and a half to be nearest at the finish. From a yard well used to exploiting handicap marks, it would be a surprise on this evidence if there aren't such races to be won with this horse.
Herbert Crescent has been slowly returning to some sort of form and followed up his good run here two weeks ago with another solid performance. Held up in rear, he seemed to take a long time to get into his stride, but once he did, he came home very strongly inside the final furlong to be nearest at the finish. [JOH]
