Ormus prominent, chased winner after 3 out, ridden and outpaced before next, kept on steadily but well held after
Norman Beckett led 3rd until 5th, 3rd and driven before 2 out, little response and plodded on

Johny Scruff behind, progress to midfield 7th, ridden after 3 out, soon lost touch
Opus Star chased leaders until 3 out, soon lost touch
Karinga King 7th but detached from leaders after 5th, tailed off after 3 out
Starlight Air mistakes and jumped slowly, never going well towards rear, tailed off after 3 out
I´m Gunner Be Fine chased leaders until jumped slowly 6th and ridden and weakened, tailed off after 3 out
Desert Maze behind, mistake 4th, some progress and in touch but not pushed after 3 out, no chance after but not disgraced
Future Legend took keen hold and prominent, led 5th, headed 3 out, dropped out rapidly, tailed off
Ned Harte ridden after 5th, hopelessly tailed off after next
Smart behind, hopelessly tailed off after 6th
Having set out to make all, he jumped big at the first couple of flights and was soon headed, but back on an even keel he reassumed the advantage three out and stayed on strongly in the home straight. Trainer Tom George said afterwards that a return to steeplechasing would be on the cards before long, with a tilt at "one of the big handicap chases" on the cards in the autumn. He had scraps of very good form over hurdles and would have gone close in a valuable novice handicap chase at Cheltenham in January 2007 had he not come down at the last so he could well still be a force in that sphere provided that he remains sound and that his jumping problems have been resolved.
Ormus kept on gutsily in the closing stages and is progressing. It will be interesting to see what the handicapper makes of the form, but an official rating of 90 probably under-estimates him.
Johny Scruff was another who came there strongly from the rear division, but he did not seem to get home and was ultimately beaten a long way. He has ability and should be placed to advantage before long. Desert Maze shaped better than the bare result suggested, while Starlight Air kept plugging away having been one of the first to come under pressure.
