Since breaking his maiden in a run-of-the-mill, all-weather maiden in April, the son of Orpen has gone from strength and strength and the form of his last-time-out second to Wise Melody had been boosted earlier this week by third-home Tawzeea.
Quickly away, he was soon in front under Micky Fenton and with six furlongs arguably his minimum trip (seemsjust as effective over seven), it was always going to take a good one to reel him in, particularly as he copes with give underfoot.
Long-term, the Ayr Gold (or more likely, Silver) Cup is a possible target, but he will need to find plenty more improvement in the meantime.
Like the winner, Dunn'o was always to the fore. He edged left close home as he tried to reel in the winner, but he had the rest well beaten off and this was good effort. A half-brother to Ashdown Express, he could keep improving with age, although he wouldn't want to go up too much in the weights for this. That said, the winner's time was only a little slower than that of the 100-rated winner of the previous race, so maybe this was a better race than it looked.
Of the remainder, Marvellous Value deserves credit as the only horse to make any sort of impression from off the pace. He wasn't given too hard a time close home and would not be one to discard from calculations purely on the strength of this run, particularly given the impression that he made when scoring over five furlongs at this track in April.
Muhajaar was all the rage in the betting ring and travelled purposefully for a while before starting to struggle almost as soon as pressure was applied. Having performed well at this track on his previous start and also having seemed to handle soft ground, this was a disappointing effort although the race was clearly not run to suit.
Several of these patently failed to handle conditions with the likes of Montaquila and Quest For Success beaten after a couple of furlongs.
Captain Dunne was reported to have lost an off-fore shoe.
