Having looked in trouble when shaken up after a couple of furlongs, DAMIKA quickly came back on the bridle and, with the second and third, managed to avoid the chaos in front by being on theleft side of the errant leader.
It was left to the winner and Advanced to fight out the finish from the furlong pole, but the winner just had too many guns close home. He has improved this season, making the frame in a couple of particularly hot sprint handicaps, but he showed last season that he stays seven furlongs well and it is back to that trip next for the five-year-old, who is an intended runner in the Ladbrokes Bunbury Cup on Friday, where he will carry a 6lb penalty.
Though it might be tempting to take a literal reading of this form through the 104-rated runner-up, translating conditions-race form into handicaps is never a good idea and, although he will no doubt run his race, there will presumably be something less exposed in the line-up.
He couldn't be described as a prolific winner, but may prefer an end-to-end gallop in a big field, having run particularly well in such circumstances before, and this was certainly a good effort.
Bentong was never dangerousin third while Knot In Wood was a bit disappointing in fourth having run well in the Wokingham. Both horses seem to fall between stools at present, having too much weight in handicaps without being good enough for Pattern races.
Reverence and Bobs Surprise were the principal sufferers as New Freedom lost his bearings, with the latter particularly looking worth another chance, while Rising Shadow kept on steadily having also lost ground in the scrimmaging.
But Nota Bene's effort petered out quickly close home, as did that of Les Arcs, who presumably needed this on his first start for more than a year.
