With his stamina assured at this trip, he was given a predictably confident ride by Seb Sanders, who struck for home two furlongs out. A relentless galloper, he stayed on strongly and the handicapper's likely reaction to a four-length victory in such a competitive handicap is likely to force his trainer's hand towards Listed or Group races.
Luca Cumani's previous winners of this race have had mixed fortunes subsequently, but although he is unlikely to be another Japan Cup winner like Alkaased, Mad Rush is a very likeable sort. This performance clearly suggests he is improving, while also giving a boost to the efforts of Punjabi and Sugar Ray, who had beaten him this season.
Young Mick travelled strongly and kept on well to snatch second, confirming the promise he had shown when fourth behind Mad Rush at Ascot on his previous start.
Whether he will hit the heights he reached in 2006 remains to be seen and, despite his loss of form in the interim, his mark is still some way higher than that off which he has been successful in a handicap.
Camps Bay deserves plenty of credit for his effort in third. He was briefly short of room on the home turn and was also racing furthest away from the rail - and the winner - in the home straight. Along with fourth-home Pevensey, he was another to frank the form of the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes, having finished a slightly unlucky seventh (Pevensey was ninth) on his way to this race. An easier race than this must be within his grasp and he may appreciate being riddenslightly nearer to the pace.
Pevensey looks in the grip of the handicapper at present but he ran well, just holding off Buccellati, who never seems to get much luck in running and could be his own worst enemy. He does know how to win though and could be dangerous if the gaps open at the right time for him.
Further back, Pippa Greene was eased down once beaten and proved disappointing, but Alfie Flits ran a little better than his final position suggests and could be worth keeping an eye if his handicap mark comes down another few pounds.
