What had looked a competitive handicap on paper produced a placepot-busting result, dominated by outsiders.
Micky Fenton set out to make all aboard Laterly and the plan nearly came off. Two and a half lengths clear around the home turn, he gradually wound up the tempo from the front and, one by one, his better-fancied rivals fell away. But having looked as if he might have done enough, INVENTOR grabbed him close home.
Stone last coming out of the back straight, Inventor at no stage of the race looked an easy ride and he hung both right and left under pressure in the home straight before eventually hitting top gear to snatch victory in the final strides.
It might not have been pretty, but it would probably be unwise to crab the winner too much given that he has now won three from six and trainer Brian Meehan's assistant Patrick MacEwan reported that the colt had found the groundtoo quick when only sixth over this C&D on his previous start.
With five lengths back to third-home Daraahem, the double-whammy for Laterly's connections will surely come when the handicapper reassesses his mark for this effort. He is tough though andthe way he keeps improving suggests he might find compensation for this in the weeks to come.
Full Speed has a slightly awkward-looking head carriage but ran a good race. He made progress between the three-furlong and two-furlong marker and got closest to the leader at one stage before fading out of contention in the final 150 yards. He had seemed to beat Laterly fair and square on quicker ground on his previous start in a race that is working out well and must be worth another chance.
Allied Powers and Trenchtown both disappointed, looking as if they were well-placed to make their challenges before dropping away. Presumably, the going had something to do with their performances, although Allied Powers probably has enough weight for now after his hot early season streak.
Mark Johnston is still sending out winners, but a number of his team have run very poorly in recent weeks. Planetarium and Captain Webb did little to buck that trend as they trailed home a long way behind their rivals.
