KAATEB, who will be 4lb higher from today, had a first-time visor, having lacked concentration in his two second places this year, and the headgear, allied to a very astute front-running ride, did the trick. Having grabbed the lead, Richard Hills slowed things up until gradually stepping it back up from three furlongs out. The others never looked as if they would get to him, and he was clear through the final furlong. He would be off his old mark, plus a 5lb penalty, in the John Smith's at York, but he would not be sure to make the cut and would find the opposition a lot tougher there.
Gulf Express also had first-time headgear, having refused to do a tap at Royal Ascot after he was hampered leaving the stalls. He did much better here, but the winner was home and dry when he ran on late into second place.
Jeer had a stiff task at the weights with the winner on Newmarket form, andhe did about as well as could be expected.
Humungous is not badly treated now, but he was quite keen in the cheekpieces and could have done with a stronger pace. He was keeping on, but too late to make any impression.
Snoqualmie Boy raced handily enough but is on a long losing run. Troubadour was keeping on up the far rail from an unpromising position. Drill Sergeant, the only three-year-old in the race, was denied his usual lead and finished well beaten. His stable is having a thintime.
*George Baker reported that Art Man was unsuited by the ground.
