Light The Fire tracked leaders, cruised through to lead just over 2f out, edged right over 1f out, 2 lengths clear final furlong, driven out
April Pride settled in 5th or 6th, ridden and effort 2f out, stayed on to go 2nd inside final furlong, closed on winner but unable to challenge
Moss Likely held up in 5th or 6th, effort 2f out, not quicken over 1f out, ridden to dispute 2nd inside final furlong, one pace
Raggle Taggle close up, ridden to dispute lead just over 2f out, held when short of room against rail over 1f out, one pace after and lost 2 places inside final furlong
Royal Raider pushed along in last over 3f out, never on terms, kept on final furlong, nearest finish
White Shift made most against rail to just over 2f out, soon outpaced and beaten
Russet Reward with leaders to halfway, hung left and lost place rapidly soon after
LIGHT THE FIRE had impressed in his maiden at Leicester, and although he was not so good when only tenth of 25 in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, connections were inclined to blame the draw. One way or another that was not his form, but he was much better here, travelling strongly, cruising to the front approaching the two-furlong marker and looking set for a more clear-cut win until he probably idled inside the final furlong, allowing the second to close right up. He looks all speed and will be worth his chance in something like the Molecomb at Goodwood.
April Pride ran at Royal Ascot in the Albany, and she ran better, but connections feared she needed 6f now and that's how it looked here, because she only found top gear when the race was all but over. She was flattered a bit to finish so close, but can improve again when stepped up to 6f.
Raggle Taggle showed plenty of speed but was beaten when the winner edged to the right and she had to be checked.
Selling winner Royal Raider was a bit outclassed but ran well, beating two who had much better form claims in stablemate White Shift and Russet Reward, both of whom are thought to love this fast ground.
