Saxford saddle slipped leaving stalls, led after 1f, made rest, shaken up and ran on well final 150yds, readily
Saucy Brown took keen hold, led for 1f, with winner, ridden 2f out, kept on but held final 150yds, just held on for 2nd
Dabbers Chief little slowly away, towards rear, ridden and headway well over 1f out, ran on final furlong, went 3rd near finish
Oasis Breeze held up, headway and switched left 2f out, soon ridden, kept on inside final furlong
Sun Ship tracked leaders, effort 2f out, kept on same pace final furlong
Cerito tracked leaders, ridden over 2f out, soon beaten
Shampagne took keen hold early, tracked leaders, ridden over 2f out, soon beaten
SAXFORD ran out a convincing winner but deserves more credit as his saddle slipped as he got impetuous in the stalls and his rider noticeably pulled him wider of the pack to race virtually alone midtrack. He still showed his customary dash and more impressively found more when asked into the final furlong to settle the race. He could head for Goodwood next and while the bare form will leave him something to find with the principals in something like the Richmond, it would be no surprise if he proved up to it. He was also given the Gimcrack entry this week and connections feel sure he will get 7f to open up further opportunities.
While the rest finished in something of a heap, there was strong form represented. Saucy Brown was bidding to give his stable a fourth win in this in the last five years. Unlucky not to finish closer in the Windsor Castle at Ascot, he showed good all-round speed and battled away over this extra furlong to hold second. He lacks the same scope as the winner but still shapes like a Listed winner in waiting.
Oasis Breeze and Sun Ship both ran big races, especially the once-raced filly Oasis Breeze, a late foal who stuck to her task well raised sharply in class from her maiden win. She looks like getting another furlong and has scope to go on and win at this level.
Sun Ship brought the Group 2 Norfolk form to the table and while he was well held at Royal Ascot, he was not beaten far for a place here after showing good speed onthe inside-rail wing of the field.
Cerito, in front of that rival in the Norfolk, has lost his way after such promising beginnings in a runaway win at Bath. He looks a pure speedster, although he was beaten too far out for this to be his true running.
*Shampagne was reported to have run too freely to halfway.
