SALUTE may have been up to this class in his prime but only a couple of claimers have passed his way in the last two years. Add in the runner-up being 11lb out of the handicap and it tells the story that this was more like a Class 5 contest.
This was only his second win at the track but he has shown a liking for the course and with his rider playing to the stamina strengths against rivals with queries about that, he was not for beating from the top of the straight. He had to dig deep in the final furlong as Mister Completely and Leyte Gulf, both out of the handicap and plying their trade unsuccessfully at a much lowergrade.
Leyte Gulf ran as he had done last week, not having the pace into the home straight before plodding on better than others without threatening to land a blow. He has suffered with the handicapper for his consistency and remains hard to place to advantage.
Right Option, another with a worrying array of placings, was plodding on when it was all over.
