Analyis of the race
Some in-form performers with solid recent efforts in handicaps to their name at the top of the weights for this contest and VIOLENT VELOCITY had certainly been knocking on the door after making the frame in each of his last seven starts. He missed the break here but his capable partner did not panic, switching him off the inside rail to the stands' side over a furlong out and producing him to lead in the final furlong. Unlucky at Doncaster four days previously, he did well to win here and is clearly in excellent heart at present.
Esoterica has also been running well without success - or luck - but he looks less than straightforward as after moving up to have every chance here he tended to hang right and found less than might have been expected. He is clearly up to winning off this mark but looks to need to have things drop just right.
The ground was plenty quick enough for Hiccups but he kept on for a creditable fourth, ahead of Cheery Cat who ran respectably and Oeuf A La Neige, who shaped as though he needs to revert to further.
Wisdom's Kiss has yet to prove he is as good on the turf as he is on the all-weather.
