Tracey Collins' team have been slow to fire this year but in recent weeks have shown definite signs of turning that corner. This winner had been campaigned at a high level and had been Listed placed coming here. This was her first start in a maiden since running third to recent French Derby runner-up Famous Name at Naas last July, so she wasn't winning out of turn.
The advantage of the running rail probably made the difference in the end when the 89-rated filly battled back to deny House Rebel after earlier shrugging off the attentions of the fancied Signora Frasi. The winner, ninth of 13 in the Boylesports Irish 1,000Guineas, will have a crack at a stakes race next, according to the winning trainer.
The runner-up, officially rated 16lb inferior to the winner, ran her best race. She gradually closed to challenge and lead marginally inside the final furlong but the winner pulled out more where it mattered. This ground was probably a shade too quick for the second and she may prefer a little ease.
Signora Frasi had failed to step up from her encouraging debut back at this shorter trip at Leopardstown last time. She attracted plenty of market support on that occasion and was fancied by many, but after racing prominently had no more to find when the race unfolded in the straight.
Toberanthawn was easy to back beforehand. She needed help to be loaded and turning for home was still in touch but she was unable to let herself down fully on this quicker ground when asked a question.[BF]
