His rider described the horse as never really travelling throughout the race, with his jumping keeping him in it. He still managed to work his way into a challenging position early in the straight and left it as late as possible, as he kept on strongly from the last to get up without the rider having to resort to much more than hands and heels.
It was quite a decent performance and he has every chance of maintaining his progression over the summer months.
Amicus Curiae was still in with a definite squeak when coming to grief at Tralee the other week and demonstrated with this performance that he's good enough to win a handicap. Never far from the pace, he closed up on the inside to lead between the final two flights and was unlucky to be just touched off on the line.
A mare who looks capable of winning a handicap hurdle is Bitofpresent. She raced reasonably prominently and travelled well to the front at the third-last, but just found herself vulnerable to some more potent finishers once she got there. The lack of a run since February may have told against her as well, but it was a perfectly good performance and she looks good enough to win a summer handicap.
Another to fit into that category to some description was Golden Moon. She was held up well off the pace and kept on with a sustained run from early in the straight. She was nearest at the finish and wouldn't object to a step up in trip.
Favourite backers knew their fate early as Roamanob dropped back through the field, having been prominent very early, and was pulled up before the fourth. He was found to be lame upon veterinary examination.
