SURFACE TO AIR was the least-exposed horse in the field, this being only his fourth run over fences. He had won his last two races, both over 3m4f, and found further improvement over this longer trip as he defied a 9lb rise for his latest success to score by an emphatic margin.
The winner is clearly progressing fastand connections reckon he could well make up into a SunAlliance type next year, with trainer Chris Bealby holding the view that the horse is not just an out-and-out stayer. But this was certainly his best effort to date and he would look an ideal type for races such as the Welsh National.
Out The Black was unproven beyond 3m2f, but connections evidently had no doubt about his ability to see out the trip as he had been laid out for this race. He ran right up to his best form, but found one too goodin the fast-improving Surface To Air.
Rakalackey, who had been going well when blundering his chance away at Cartmel last time, was again not foot-perfect here, but plugged on through beaten rivals in the straight to finish a creditable third.
Veteran Harlov, who had beaten Take The Stand in a hunter chase at Stratford last time, found the competition a bit too hot on this return to handicap company, but he was by no means disgraced.
Mr Ed was struggling from a long way out, while his stablemate Snoopy Loopy was alsonot travelling all that well when he was brought down by the falling Chabrimal Minster, who was still there with every chance, but starting to be ridden when departing four out.
Always Waining was even more disappointing, for he was being chased along with a circuit to run and found little for the pressure.
