The merit of the form revolves around how French Riviera has run. His two conquerors here back in April have fully franked the form but he was only just ahead of a pack that has singularly failed to do the same. It was a surprise to see him stepping up in trip and, given a most positive ride, he was fully five lengths clear with Optimus Maximus of the pack into the last 3f, before capitulating tamely when entering the final furlong.
As such the form looks modest with DANCE THE STAR returning to confirm the promise of his debut effort before a disappointing and unexplained second run. He's a big colt and still green. He took time to hit top stride and then wandered badly left when in front. As such, there should be more to come, but his fate is in the hands of the handicapper.
Optimus Maximus clung on to third but was a sitting target into the final furlong and only just clung on from promising newcomer Starburst, who lost her chance by missing the break by fully six lengths. She did some running to get into the pack by the home turn and staying nearest the stands rail as the leaders took the field more midtrack for the first time on the day, she could never land a blow.
