It provided a golden opportunity for the frustrating AUTUMN BLADES, who has a BHA mark of 72 and was totally different class, if only he would put his best foot forward. The one-sided betting reflected his superiority, but he was very keen under restraint in the first-time blinkers, and there was a moment when it looked as if he might get trapped behind horses. Even when a gap appeared on the rail Richard Quinn was at pains not to commit him too soon, and although he moved upsides long-time leader Station Place with a furlong still to go, Quinn sat still until nudging him ahead near the finish. Colin Gorman, representing John Hills, reckons Autumn Blades simply lacks the confidence to go with his ability. The blinkers helped, but he could have done with a stronger pace. This was a step in the right direction, but he probably would still not be the most reliable of propositions.
The third and fourth had shown nothing previously either, and it would be dangerous to assume this represents improvement.
