The night opened with an apprentice riders' handicap that featured three last-time-out winners, but in a very rough race, one of them, ZABEEL TOWER, enjoyed a dream run, another Mountain Pass, did not, while the other, Wahoo Sam, had a total nightmare.
For Zabeel Tower, a cosy Musselburgh winner one week ago, things panned out perfectly with his rider Lance Betts securing a perfect spot on the rail just off the pace, from which he ignited his mount at the top ofthe straight. The five-year-old then unleashed a useful turn of foot before idling in front, as he tends to do, but the winning post came in time.
A small rest is set to come next, but his change of gear should enable him to resume winning ways on hisreturn.
Just Oscar was one of many who became involved in scrimmaging on the turn for home. That proved costly, as he was reeling in the winner through the final furlong and definitely looked as though he would have nicked the spoils, granted a few extra strides. This run followed a Warwick third on Thursday, so a break must be in order, but he should be watched on his return as he has evidently run into form.
Derricks Dotty shaped pleasingly on his first start in 250 days and looks very much capable of popping up at a price.
Tanforan was badly hampered early in the contest, which makes his final finishing position all the more honourable. Further back, Sands Of Barra went well for a long way but is not quite at his best at the moment.
Punters who backed Wahoo Sam will rightly feel aggrieved. For whatever reason, Richard Evans did not remove the Bath winner's hood until some time after the stalls opened, after which the horse veered badly to his right.
That was unfortunate enough, but Evans then rushed his mount from the back of the field to the heels of the leaders, a manoeuvre that was made around the outer of everything else. Not surprisingly, Wahoo Sam's energy was very quickly sapped.
