BERTIE SOUTHSTREET maintained the hot form of his stable and opened his account for the year with a ready effort. He proved free early on, but that was not enough to stop him finding a decent turn of foot when asked and he looked to have something left up his sleeve. This was, surprisingly, his first try at 5f since winning his only previous race at it as a juvenile in 2005 and he would have to be of interest under a penalty.
Comptonspirit, runner-up on his last two outings, was always well placed and had every chance only to again find one too good. He deserves compensation, but the handicapper has him where he wants him.
Brandywell Boy signalled a return to form with a sound effort. He ideally needs another furlong and looks one to side with again when stepping up in trip.
Pic Up Sticks, back on quicker ground, got himself behind early on and then had to wait for his challenge, but his response when in the clear was one-paced. He is well treated on his best form, but is not one to trust completely these days.
Equuleus Pictor was not disgraced considering he would have found this test plenty sharp enough on the quicker ground. He may still be weighted to win when getting his favoured easy ground.
Bold Argument, 6lb higher, did not prove suited by the drop in trip but did not overly impress with his head carriage when put under maximum pressure.
