PORTUGESE CADDY, bred to find this an absolute minimum trip, proved a very game winner on his debut. The gelding was slightly outpaced at halfway chasing the front rank, but he kept on strongly and should progress as he steps upin distance.
Campbeltown Trader enjoyed this better ground to step up on his debut effort, but he is another who should get further and so come into his own later this season.
Rumble Of Thunder, another who should get 1m in time, raced widest out and shaped with distinct promise, while a strong daytime move for newcomer Defector evaporated before the race, but this strapping colt showed why he is clearly well regarded. He was slowly away in a fast-run race but still made a strong move from halfway to get onto the heels of the leaders before lack of peak-fitness told. He can step up markedly on the bare form for this experience.
Wave Aside and, to a lesser extent, Black Skirt took the eye. Wave Aside was still last at halfway, and with nowhere to go on the unfavoured stands' side, he weaved through late to finish with a flourish, and with his trainer not noted for first-time-out winners, he looks a winner in waiting.
Black Skirt did not look that happy on the ground and stumbled past halfway before running up the backsides of rivals. She was still staying on to the line and can uphold strong family tradition.
Barnezet was reported to have hung left, while River Captain was reported to have no more to give.
