COLLECTION had more improvement to make than most, but he had made a big impression when winning his handicap at York, admittedlyoff a mark of only 80, and he was one of the stand outs in the paddock. There was no shortage of confidence behind him, and Kerrin McEvoy rode him accordingly, holding him up at the back of the field until into the straight, where it was clear when he began his move that there was plenty there. Collection made his way through the middle of the pack in the style of a class horse before hitting the front inside the final furlong and coming away for a really decisive win. It was a particularly good effort considering how the race was run, and he looks sure to hold his own in better company provided he gets this fast ground.
Staying On also looked particularly good in the preliminaries, and he confirmed the excellent impression he had made when winning the hot Haydock 1m handicap by making the running and then holding the rest off gamely after Collection went past, despite edging right and left. The trip was not a problem and he is another progressive sort.
Things had not fallen for Lingfield Derbytrial second King Of Rome at Epsom, but he redeemed himself to a fair extent here, staying on well up the outer after having only three behind him starting up the straight. He needs further, or at the very least a stronger pace.
Without A Prayer made an effort on the outside but it flattened out in the closing stages. A fair effort nevertheless.
Alfathaa, a stablemate of the winner, made some ground in the first-time blinkers, but Central Station had been much too keen in his headgear.
Unnefer, who faced a tough task conceding the penalty, was inclined to hang right under pressure, while his old rival Pampas Cat weakened after chasing the pace.
Dr Faustus was never competitive after being held up in rear, while his stablemate Kensington Oval proved far too inexperienced for a race like this, as he had to be chased along briefly after missing the break and he was at the rear throughout, never looking like getting involved. Kensington Oval made a good impression at Sandown and is worth another chance.
The 2,000 Guineas sixth Moynahan looked a doubtful stayer and gave himself no chance by racing much too keen.
Ted Durcan reported that Unnefer had no more to give. [GD]
