Analyis of the race

Some progressive recent winners in this three-year-old handicap but the quick ground conditions made it difficult to come from behind, a prominent early position proved crucial and the result may not prove an entirely accurate guide to the runners' merits.

Certainly ACTABOU had the run of the race, soon in front, making all and holding on well. So this may not represent quite the improvement on recent efforts that it first appears, though he had certainly slipped to a lowly mark and obviously has the speed to make him worthy of consideration in these sort of conditions.

Royal Acclamation, a winner at Catterick earlier in the month, ran another good race off a 5lb higher mark, always to the fore, as was Strawberry Moon, the least exposedrunner in the line-up who made an encouraging switch to handicaps, and hat-trick-seeking Filligree, who was not at all disgraced under a 6lb penalty.
