Sugar Raywas 10lb higher here than when beating a small field in a weak race at Bath, but he was not that exposed and the application of a first-time tongue tie after a subsequent third at York may have been significant. He was given an excellent ride by Ryan Moore, who dictated the pace and kept him wide of the rail, presumably for better ground and remains progressive. He is clearly one of Danehill's staying types, and as there is stamina on the dam's side too one could see him entered for the Ebor.
Hot favourite Mad Rush went up 9lb for his Newmarket second to leniently-treated Punjabi, and that proved just too much as he had every chance here and there was no other apparent excuse. Unfortunately he is likely to be raised again for this.
King Charles stayed on and clearly got the trip on his first try at 1m4f, but he has long been struggling against the handicapper, and things are not going to get any easier after this.
The 2006 winner Young Mick was back downto handicap company for the first time since his third in that year's Ebor off the same mark as this. This track certainly brings out the best in him and he ran his best race in a long while, keeping on after moving into contention before the turn.
Camps Bay ran better than his bare finishing position suggests, as he was in the last three at Swinley Bottom and still towards the rear turning into the straight.Switched to the rail inside the final furlong, he was running on well at the finish. His stablemate Night Crescendo was with him at the back at Swinley Bottom and also ran a bit better than the form suggests, for he had to make his ground round the outside.
Last year's soft-ground winner Pevensey never really threatened to get out of mid-division off a 5lb higher mark. Ezdiyaad, who needed the rain to participate, ruined his chance by running too keen over this longer trip. Gulf Express was snatched up when Jadalee crossed him leaving the stalls and this can be ignored. [GD]
