Jedburgh, who had also been held up at the back, pressed the winner hard through the final furlong. He had not won a handicap since he took the corresponding race off 99 in 2005, when it was run at York, but a Group 3 win in Ireland had kept him on a high enough mark until recently. It had been looking increasingly as if he had lost his way, but on this evidence he is still a force to reckon with over 7f on fast ground.
Whereas Regal Parade and Jedburgh finished clear of the rest on the stands' side, they finished in a heap on the other side of the track. Dhaular Dhar won that race, putting up just about the performance of his life. He was chased home by Border Music, who travelled as strongly as ever but found the final furlong taxing his reserves, Laa Rayb, who had been held up in midfield on that side and was keeping on without quite threatening to get there, and South Cape, who had been held up out the back and finished best in that group to get on to the principals' heels. South Cape had finished in the first six here last year, too, and could be poised to win again soon.
Lovelace, a Group 3 winner last year, came from the back of the far side group to lead for a spell. He ran in a hugely valuable race in Singapore last month and this was his first run in a handicap since September. His stable has had a quiet week, but this was reasonably encouraging.
Meydan Dubai, still a maiden, ran reasonably well in that group, too, although he was never going well enough to trouble the principals and shaped as if another furlong will help.
The benefit of the blinkers may have worn off on Docofthebay, who was making a quick reappearance after Wednesday's fine second in the Hunt Cup.*Frankie Dettori reported that Iguazu Falls was unsuited by the ground.
*Paul Hanagan reported that Hinton Admiral hung left.
*Richard Thomas reported that Carnivore was never travelling. [GD]
