Mahler was a grinding winner and went on to run a gallant second in the St Leger. Patkai imperiously dismissed this year's class, swooping into the final two furlongs to have the race won in a matter of strides. Pushed out to the line, he was full value for the wide margin but not for something of an overreaction to being promoted nearly favourite for the St Leger, pushing stablemate and owner's Derby runner-up Tartan Bearer for that privilege. However, in comparison with his connections' other possible contender Conduit, runner-up in the Group 2 King Edward VII earlier, he looks value at 8-1 against 10-1 with Hills. He is as short as 4-1 joint favourite with Paddy Power but generally 6-1. Related to Islington and Greek Dance, who got better with maturity, the omens are good for this colt.
What Patkai proved with this demolition is that he is a rapidly progressive colt, who has no stamina queries but more importantly a good turn of foot for a stayer. While the overall form can be crabbed, with the rest finishing in something of a heap, he did all that can be asked of a potential top performer.
Amerigo has done nothing but progress and while this giant did not have the speed to match the winner, he outstayed the rest despite getting up quite a head of steam under restraint running downhill on the far side up with the solid pace. Connections are eyeing the Doncaster Cup, in which there are favourable terms for three-year-olds, but he is seen as a potential Cup horse next year as he strengthens up physically and mentally.
Gravitation just lost out on the nod for second and this was another solid effort, especially as she raced with the choke out for the first half of the contest. She looks to have improved for the sounder surface and connections mentioned the Park Hill Stakes as a target. although again she is a filly with physical scope to prove better next year.
Enroller did not get the run of the race, stuck in the rail pocket around the home bend. He was another struggling for pace into the final two furlongs but was closing again late, having to be switched back right again.
It is the proximity of Judgethemoment and Moment's Notice, who look more like candidates for a future Ascot Stakes off their current handicap marks, that suggest caution over the strength of the form. Judgethemoment shapes like a dour stayer, as he struggled for pace as the race took shape but was edging closer late. Moment's Notice, who took a good grip to post, was dropped in last but was another to get keen running downhill. He was pulled wide into the straight to make a run but could never land a blow but stayed on better than those around him.
Captain Webb and Age Of Reason set off in front, but Donegal moved up to keep them on their toes which left all three vulnerable. Age Of Reason is the one to take out of the three, as he did not look happy on the ground, not surprisingly for a gelding with a ground-pounding action. He was threatening to rally for fifth or sixth when short of room between rivals near the inside rail and he was eased when beaten, as was Unleashed, who made a brief effort widest out midtrack into the final two furlongs but never threatened to get competitive.
