Supaseus made all, ridden over 2f out, battled on gamely
Many Volumes chased winner for 1f, chased leading pair after, not clear run just over 2f out, soon switched left and forced way out, chased winner under pressure after, edged right and unable to quicken final furlong
Pinpoint held up in rear, headway and ridden over 2f out, edged right briefly over 1f out, ran on well, not reach winner
Buccellati took keen hold, held up in midfield, headway 3f out, switched right and unable to quicken under pressure over 1f out, staying on when not clear run inside final furlong, unable to challenge winner
Halicarnassus pulled hard, held up in last, came wide and ridden well over 2f out, still last 2f out, ran on strongly final furlong, not reach leaders
Monte Alto took keen hold, held up in last pair, pulled out and ridden well over 2f out, ran on but never pace to reach leaders
Illustrious Blue took keen hold, held up in midfield, ridden over 2f out, switched right over 1f out, kept on but never pace to threaten leaders
Watamu pulled hard, held up in midfield, headway 4f out, chased leaders and ridden over 2f out, weakened well over 1f out
Emirates Skyline chased winner after 1f, ridden over 2f out, bumped and lost position 2f out, weakened over 1f out
Under The Rainbow took keen hold, chased leaders, ridden over 2f out, soon weakened, eased inside final furlong
However, this time the race went to a five-year-old in SUPASEUS, who prevailed under a well-judged front-running ride from Steve Drowne. The pace he set was only ordinary and that would not have been to the advantage of the hold-up horses, among whom the chief sufferers looked to be Halicarnassus and the favourite Monte Alto.
The Hughie Morrison-trained winner had run well to finish third off a 4lb lower mark on his first try at this trip at York last month and, in a race in which nothing else wanted to go on, he was able to dictate at his own pace, which caused several of his rivals to take a grip. Having stacked the opposition up, he quickened off the final bend and had enough in reserve to hold the challengers. He may go for the John Smith's Cup at York next month under a 5lb penalty, which means he will be off a mark of 105.
Many Volumes was one of those to race keenly early on, but he was always in a good position just behind the leaders. Although briefly short of room when hemmed in by the weakening Emirates Skyline passing the two-furlong pole, he got out in plenty of time and had every chance. This was his third consecutive second placing and he deserves a change of luck.
Pinpoint had a bit to find with Many Volumes, having finished well adrift of him in a couple of conditions events this season, but this was much better. Helooked as though he might even win at one stage when produced with his effort from off the pace, but he was making little impression on the winner in the last half-furlong.
Little went right for Halicarnassus, who was back in handicap company after finishing fourth to Wednesday's Prince of Wales winner Duke Of Marmalade in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh last month. Visored for the first time here, he got badly messed about when the field crowded in towards the inside rail after the start and then took a fierce hold out the back. He was still last passing the two-furlong pole and was switched very wide in order to make his effort, but although he finished very strongly he was never going to get there.
The well-backed favourite Monte Alto was another forced to make his effort wide down the home straight, but he appeared to be hanging from the furlong pole and his run soon flattened out.
Illustrious Blue and Watamu did their chances no good by taking a grip early, especially the latter, who pulled like a train running down to Swinley Bottom. It may be best to forgive them this, but Emirates Skyline was disappointing considering he was well placed throughout, yet dropped away tamely. Perhaps this race came too soon after his successful return to action at Epsom two weeks earlier following an 11-month absence.
Under The Rainbow saw plenty of daylight on the outside and was yet another to race keenly, but was still disappointing even though she is still without a win since her two-year-old days. [DB]
