Jim Bolger's CUIS GHAIRE was heavily backed all day and justified the support with a battling performance. The form of her maiden win over 6f at Naas hasn't really worked out this week, with runner-up Silver Shoon well beaten in the Windsor Castle, and the third, Heart Shaped, down the field in the Queen Mary, but she had shown herself to be a smart filly when winning the Group 3 Swordlestown Sprint Stakes on her next start, and escaped a penalty for that success. That form was by far the best on show, hence the short price, and the only real concern was, being a daughter of Galileo, whether she would have the pace to cope with such a speed test, even though her latest win was gained over this trip.
As it turned out, the early pace was surprisingly modest, and she ended up taking a bit of a grip passing the four-furlong pole, which wasn't a surprise considering she was allowed to bowl along last time. She was much happier once switched to the left of early-leader April Pride, but was flatfooted when the pace began to increase approaching the two-furlong pole and briefly looked in trouble when coming under strong pressure. However, her stamina kicked in and she kept finding to get on top in the final furlong.
Thebare form does not look anything special at this stage but, considering she is bred to appreciate trips of 1m-plus, to win a Group 3 over this trip marks her down as potentially high class. She is likely to be aimed at the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh, a 7f Group 2 in August, and, if all goes according to plan, she would go for the Moyglare Stud Stakes, a Group 1 over the same course and distance, which her stable landed last year with Saoirse Abu. Her odds for next year's 1,000 Guineas, between 10-1 and 5-1, make little appeal at this stage considering the risks involved in ante-post punting.
Penny's Gift, aimed at this event since landing the second of two races at Chepstow, ran well in defeat. She was given every chance by Ryan Moore, but was simply beaten by a better filly. She may be aimed at the Super Sprint, a race in which her stable has a great record.
Danidh Dubai, whose trainer won this race with Silca's Gift in 2003 and last year with Nijoom Dubai, came here off the back of asuccess in a 6f maiden at Haydock and ran a solid race in third. She struggled to get a good position early on, and had to come from further back than the front two, but she finished well and might have got second in a few more strides. She looks the type to run well in something like the Cherry Hinton, with the Newmarket July course's stiff finish almost sure to suit, and the winner of that race has come out of the Albany in three of the last four years.
April Pride took them along at a sensible pace on this step up in trip, with Richard Hughes looking to save a bit, and she is possibly a touch flattered. Still, there was a lot to like about the way she stuck to her task and she has an entry in the Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy.
Ares Choix, a winner over this trip at Redcar on her previous start, showed bags of speed but did not quite see out her race. Her dam was a 1m2f winner, but she is by Choisir and, on this evidence, she would not mind a drop back to 5f. Slightly easier ground may also suit better.
Art Princess, targeted at this race since winning over 5f at Nottingham on her second start (Ares Choix sixth), was stuck out wide towards the middle of the track for much of the way and made only a shortlived effort.
Aspen Darlin did not help her chances by racing keenly.
Salsa Star is held in high regard by Richard Fahey, but she failed to land a telling blow and flashed her tail when hit with the whip.
The French filly Jet D'Eau had won her first two starts on easier ground, but she was never going this time.
Please Sing, a stablemate of the third and winner of a 5f maiden at Leicester on her debut, was the only one backed against the favourite, but she played up beforehand, getting rid of her rider at the start and needing a blanket for stalls entry, and she ranno race.
Aahaygirl probably found the ground too quick, while Foxtrot Alpha and Daisy Moses failed to build on debut wins gained in much lesser company.
*Jimmy Fortune reported that Daisy Moses ran too free. [RW]
