Analyis of the race

Some useful fillies lined up here, but they were a real mixed bag, with quite a few dropping in class (and in some cases significantly in trip) after starting out with Classic aspirations, and others barely out of maidens.

Following the trend in earlier races up the straight course, including both the Windsor Forest and the Hunt Cup over the same distance, they all congregated towards the stands' side, which inevitably led to traffic problems.

They finished in a heap and the winning time was arounda second slower than for either of those races.

FESTIVALE was overshadowed earlier in the season by her stablemate Muthabara, who went to the Guineas after landing the Fred Darling, but she had shown she is a useful filly in her own right with herthird in the Nell Gwyn, after which she had beaten two of these when third again to Coronation Stakes hope Raymi Coya at York.

Making her handicap debut off a reasonable enough 94, she travelled pretty well under cover towards the outside of the pack, saw daylight in plenty of time, and having been sent in pursuit of Illusion in the the final furlong she got there near the finish, winning a bit more cosily than the bare margin suggests.

Illusion had finished only seventh in the good Doncaster handicap won by Britannia hopeful Redford, but she was unexposed after only three runs and she was at the right end of the handicap. Up there all of the way, pressing the leader, she went to the front over 2f out and went a length or two clear, but the winner gradually wore her down. Compensation awaits.

Shabiba started the season as a possible Guineas outsider, but after finishing only ninth in the Nell Gwyn she ran second in a good fillies' handicap at Newbury. The extra furlong was a worry here, and she did herself no favours by running so keen up the rail on the heels of Makaaseb that her rider must have had a real scare just over 6f out. To her credit she stuck on well, and she may yet win a nice race.

The Nell Gwyn fourth Rosaleen had to wait for daylight, and although she was not unlucky this was a fair effort.

Comeback Queen did not have enough pace when it mattered, but she stayed on.

Dellini, drawn one from the outside, was bang in contention for a place at least going to 1f out. Down in class but up in trip, this 1m may have stretched her.

This looks more Tathkaar's level and she was not disgraced. Nor was top-weight Eva's Request, who showed up well in this easier company after tackling Group fillies all season, including in the Irish Guineas.

Insaaf got no run at all in the first-time headgear, but she was also inclined to hang and did not look entirely straightforward.

Amanjena found 1m too sharp and was not knocked about in pursuit of a lost cause. She is better than this.

Maramba seemed well fancied, despite an absence of 235 days, but having been held up in touch she started to struggle with 2f to go and the situation was accepted in the final furlong.

Makaaseb made the running in the first-time cheekpieces, the application of which came as a bit of a surprise.

Cruel Sea continues to disappoint and was still too free, despite the drop in trip.[GD]
