His trainer John Best went one better this time with the maiden FLASHMANS PAPERS, a 100-1 chance who had given the impression that he might have been a short runner when third at both Windsor and Kempton. For good measure Best also saddled the more fancied third-placed Mullionmileanhour, as well as a third runner, Kingsgate Storm, who excelled himself in eighth on what was effectively his racecourse debut.
Flashmans Papers looked terrific here, a really strong, sprinting type, and Best felt he had come on since Kempton. He also felt the firm ground would suit. Ridden much more patiently here, he was still right at the back of the field 2f out, but when switched to the nearside for his effort he quickened up really impressively and burst to the front in the last 50 yards, to win going away. It will be tempting to follow the Kingsgate Native route, which would see him head to Goodwood for the Molecomb and then on to York and possibly Longchamp. He will not want underestimating provided he has similar underfoot conditions.
Bushranger had beaten a previous winner well on his debut at Tipperary and was a well-fancied favourite. Ridden much more prominently than the winner up the middle of the track, he confirmed himself a useful sprinting juvenile but was beaten fair and square.
Mullionmileanhour had made a big impression in a fair race at Kempton on his debut, and although he had been off two months since then he was well fancied. Held up on the heels of the far-side leaders, he came through for a fine third, but the winner and second were too strong for him. He has a decent prize in him.
Interestingly, with the winner nearside, the second in the middle, and the third far side the draw seemed to play little part.
Effort raced prominently on the far side and showed improved form in fourth. He had every chance and may have shown in front briefly.
Goodwood second Total Gallery ran well too, although his promising effort on the stand's side of the pack rather petered out inthe end. He should win a maiden without too much trouble.
Donativum was restrained at the start in the first-time blinkers, but he was still inclined to run too keen. He did not do at all badly in the circumstances.
Kingsgate Storm did not havea race on his debut at Kempton, having almost fallen leaving the stalls. He showed plenty here and looks another certain maiden winner if connections do not aim higher.
Khor Dubai was not disgraced in mid-division, and nor was Light The Fire, who showed bags of speed on the far side but could not keep it up.
Miss Hollybell had a lot on her plate and ran well. An ordinary maiden over an easy 5f ought to suit her.
Irish challenger Silver Shoon, best in on RPRs, did not get a clear run at halfway and was then hampered again when Saucy Brown began his effort. The situation was accepted and this can be ignored.
Further back the well-backed Aakef was a bit coltish in the preliminaries and did not run his race. He should have finished close to Saucy Brown on Newmarket form.
Asaint Needs Brass also failed to run his race. He was very excitable at the start and when he was finally installed he reared up before the gates opened. [GD]
