Analyis of the race

A line-up that could boast the winners of 20 races, with only three maidens in the field, suggested a strong renewal but paddock inspection hinted that there was not a lot of strength in depth.

While he did not win as far as Three Valleys, the performance of ART CONNOISSEUR brought back memories of that scintillating run by a horse who suffered his problems, but was still a Grade 2 winner in America while falling short of Group 1 stardom.

Art Connoisseur could yet prove Group 1 material, although quotes of 12-1 and 14-1 favourite for the 2,000 Guineas owes more to last year's winner Henrythenavigator having done the business unlike his predecessors.

Art Connoisseur sat last off a strong pace, although no more than four lengths back as the field raced fanned out up the middle of the track. Switched widest to the stands side wing to challenge, he showed a fine turn of foot to lead within a furlong of starting his burst.

Ridden right out, he stayed on strongly, befitting a colt who should get a mile next year. Connections are considering the Phoenix Stakes or Prix Morny while keen to step up to 7f later in the season which might take in the Dewhurst. He certainly looks a Group 1 winner-in-waiting as there looked to be better to come condition-wise.

As he numbers Balanchine in his extended family, it would be no surprise to find Godolphin making approaches.

Neither Intense Focus nor Lord Shanakill impressed as having that much scope, looking precocious, speedy sorts. They ran accordingly, but deserve credit for always being in the firing line and keeping on tenaciously to pull clear of the pack, along with Himalya.

Himalya may well progress past them as he was still very green, both to post and in the race. He was still one of the last off the bridle as he travelled well tracking the pace. He is a beefy colt, who looks a sprinter in the making with Group class.

Orizaba is a strapping colt, who can progress over further in time. He was back on his haunches when the stalls opened and was always playing catch-up. He lacked the speed into the final 2f but was finishing strongly.

Awinnersgame was another leaving the pack behind in the final furlong without having the speed to go with the principals from 2f out. He has not been able to get as close to Lord Shanakill as last time at York but again shaped as if he will get further.

Peter Tchaikovsky is the one to take out of the pack. An imposing colt, representing the stable who has won the race five times in the last 12 years, he looked as if this trip would find him out for speed and when he got restless in the stalls and gave them a start, the writing was on the wall. He still travelled well through the race to get back in the pack before being outpaced in the final 2f. He will not be the first of his stable to improve considerably on bare form as he strengthens into his frame.

Shaweel was another to get upset in the stalls as Icesolator in the next door stall anticipated the start. He still showed good speed and is another with physical scope and breeding to suggest further will suit.

Icesolator gave the stalls a whack with his chest as he tried to burst out and was another playing catch-up. He was not given a hard time in a lost cause and he can be forgiven this out-of-character run, which was certainly not down to any stamina limitation over this extra furlong. He should remain high on the list for whatever Goodwood assignment he is given as he has handled that track well.

Blown It, a once-raced maiden, found it all too much but still shaped as if there is better to come.

Shampagne, who looked well, was disappointing especially in the subsequent light of having finished ahead of Windsor Castle winner Flashmans Papers last time.

Smokey Storm became the latest Woodcote (Listed race) winner to come up short in this but he ran no sort of race after his game effort at Epsom 10 days ago. He too is better than the bare form but remains hard to place to advantage as he looks like coming up short at Group level.

Instalment, who looked well, ran too keenly in the front rank but still weakened disappointingly early before the principals made their move.

Square Eddie raced too keenly and fade early. [BJ]
