Gallantry always prominent, ridden to lead over 1f out, driven out
Magroom chased leader, every chance over 1f out, soon ridden, kept on
Golden Desert steadied start, pulled hard towards rear, headway over 1f out, ridden and kept on same pace final furlong
Carmenero held up in touch, ridden over 1f out, kept on same pace inside final furlong
Secret Night slowly into stride, held up in rear, ridden and headway over 1f out, no extra well inside final furlong
H Harrison set steady pace, pushed along over 2f out, carried head high and headed over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong
Champain Sands slowly into stride, took keen hold towards rear, pushed along well over 1f out, no response
Hiccups took keen hold in mid-division, lost place 3f out, behind final 2f
They got first run on the pack in the straight, and it was Gallantry - having his first run for Paul Howling after leaving Derek Shaw following his second at Chester last week - who found the better turn of foot to record his second win over course and distance. He won off higher marks last seasonand should remain fully competitive in coming weeks as he is unlikely to go up too much for this narrow win.
Magroom, below his best on soft ground at Chepstow last time, was more at home on this surface but found the winner too strong at the weights. He is 11lb higher than when successful at Bath last October, but can expect no immediate relief after this effort.
Carmenero was running on at the finish, but too late to trouble the principals; the steady pace would have been no good for hold-up horse Secret Night, and H Harrison - though he has won on fast going in the past - gave the impression that he was uneasy on the ground.
