Desert Tommy not fluent 4th, lost touch next, detached and scrubbed along rest of way, raced very idly, stayed on after 2 out to go poor 3rd at last

A fair novice, won impressively by chasing debutant QUARRY TOWN. An improving hurdler for Henrietta Knight last season, he had reportedly lost his action on his debut for David Pipe at Ayr in April, but he was always travelling and jumping well here and came clear in the straight to score in the manner of a horse who could run up a chasing sequence.

Piran, let down by his jumping in two runs since winning at Worcester early last month, jumped soundly on this occasion but found the concession of weight to Quarry Town (who was a better horse than him over hurdles) all too much for him.

Contact Dancer ran in snatches and a career record of two wins and nine seconds tells its own tale.

Nikola faced a stiffish task under his double penalty and was just not up to it.
