Despite the small field and the use of the false rail, which ended just before the two furlong marker, there was a danger that last month's Goodwood third ROSA GRACE wasn't going to get a run, having been clearly going best all the way up the straight. She would have been a very unlucky loser if she had not got out in time, but Chris Catlin never panicked and havingswitched her to the right around Melodramatic she found plenty and got to the front in plenty of time. The dam's side of the pedigree is primarily speed, but Lomitas has clearly injected plenty of stamina and Rae Guest is optimistic she will stay 1m4f. She is in the Irish Oaks, and that looks a possibility now. There is almost certainly improvement in her still, especially as Guest insists that she is such a good mover that she really wants fast ground.
Last month's impressive maiden winner Melodramatic went to the front well over a furlong out and got first run on Rosa Grace. Connections had concerns about her getting the trip, as she too is from a relatively speedy distaff line, but she finished clear of the rest and got the trip well enough. She was simply beaten by a better filly.
Disappointment of the race was joint favourite Kotsi, whose May Hill second represented much the best form on offer. Her trainer had said before the race that she ideally wants fast ground, but that alone would not account for such a moderate display and Frankie Dettori was at a loss to account for it.
