Analyis of the race

A big field, and some very interesting runners, including two with fair form from the Richard Hannon stable, and another from Mick Channon's, plus newcomers who looked likely types on breeding.

Difficult to know what the form amounts to, but the second and third brought the best previous form to the race and newcomer SRI PUTRA beat them convincingly, shaping like a useful sort.

An Oasis dream colt, but more stoutly bred on the dam's side, Sri Putra carried his owner's second colours but was prominent enough in the betting to suggest he was by no means unfancied. Drawn towards the far side, he was never far away. He took it up on the wide outside inside the last two furlongs, and was always holding on thereafter, although he looked inexperienced in front and was inclined to wander back towards the others nearer the stands' rail. His stable's first juvenile winner of the year from just a handful of runners, he may be seen next at Newmarket's July Meeting. The Superlative Stakes, over another furlong, looks the race for him.

Noble Jack is well regarded and had shown definite promise after a slow start when second to a promising stablemate at Goodwood on his debut. He broke well this time and was always prominent, but the winner was simplytoo good for him. He is more than capable of winning a maiden, but on the evidence so far he isn't quite as good as connections hoped he might be.

Liturgical was keen in the first-time headgear and was never going to maintain such a gallop to the end. He didn't do badly in holding on for fourth.

Newcomer Waahej, a 130,000 gns yearling from a decent family, was not given too hard a time in fifth, but Heliodor, a stablemate of the favourite, isn't fulfilling his initial promise and was a bit disappointing, even allowing for having been off the track since the Guineas meeting.

Few of those further back showed obvious immediate promise, but Smart Endeavour can do a fair bit better as he was too inexperienced to do himself justice.[GD]
