The five-year-old, a course and distance winner in May before finishing fast over a slightly shorter trip at Bath, put himself in serious trouble when not only rearing as the stalls opened but also headbutting rider Jack Mitchell.
However, after being given time to get back into the contest, he delivered a sustained surge through the final two furlongs to nail Figaro Flyer close home. As a big horse, he is only just coming into his own, and on his favoured fast ground he should continue to progress.
Figaro Flyer came agonisingly close to posting his first turf success since July 2005. Another who has been running well in recent weeks, he raced prominently and seemed to have stolen the prize when kicked clear entering the closing stages. Compensation should not be long in coming.
Kingsmaite made a rare visit to a turf track and ran a very respectable race, finishing one spot in front of Russian Rocket, who was never far from the lead.
Tag Team might well have finished closer than sixth but for being badly hampered when Bold Argument began his forward move at the quarter-mile pole.
Trinculo blazed a trial through the first half of the contest and stayed on better than looked likely when first headed.
