Analyis of the race

This was reasonably open by claiming standards, with several who could be given every chance, but by no means all of them will have appreciated the firm ground and unconventional track, and from well over a furlong out there were only two possible winners.

The one-eyed MOUNTAIN PASS had ticks in the right boxes, as he was already a course winner who handles firm ground well, on top of which he had one of the best chances on the figures. Never too far away, he was pulled out for his effort inside the last 2f and took charge over a furlong out, although the runner-up kept him up to his work.

Karmei, third in a Bath handicap last time off 60, couldn't go the pace but came from well back to take third, just ahead of Bookish, the only three-year-old in the field and well in on the figures, but a possible non-stayer over this longer trip in the first-time blinkers, which got her running a bit keen.

George Baker reported that Coeur Courageux was never travelling.
