Mr Wolf, a five-time course winner, broke fast from his wide stall and tried to burn off his rivals, but the winner nailed him on the line.
Pickering made a promising start to his season and, if he can build on this display, there are surely races to bewon with him.
Charles Parnell, who missed a beat at the start, was denied a clear run from the home turn andcould never get into the race. This run is best forgotten.
Funfair Wane seemed to lose his action during the closing stages and was eased.
