LADY GLORIA had sound form in Listed company, but she may have been a shade flattered here as she was left alone up front and Tom Queally was allowed to dictate a pace to suit himself. When she kicked on up the straight the hold-up horses were left with a bit to do, and although four of her rivals had got to within three-quarters of a length of her at the finish none of them quite got to her. She was thought to be ground dependant previously, but she handled this drying going perfectly well, which broadens her options. However, perhaps the real significance of the result from a punter's point of view is that it underlines the strength of Hunt Cup favourite Bankable's Goodwood win.
The consistent French challenger Cicerole was none too well away and then held up in rear. She came with a good run towards the outside but was never quite getting there.
She just shaded second place from the in-foal and in-form Enforce, who had been ridden closer to the pace but could still have done with a stronger gallop. Enforce now heads for the Windsor Forest at Royal Ascot.
Selinka, making her reappearance after being slow coming to hand once again, was one of the first off the bridle, but she stuck on really well without ever looking likely to win. She will be all the better for this and will also presumably head for the Windsor Forest now. She was second at the meeting last year.
Eva's Request, the only 3-y-o in the field and dropped in class after finishing down the field in the Irish Guineas, was carrying a 3lb penalty for last year's Group 3 win. She ran well, chasing the winner all the way round the inside and only getting run out of the places late on. She looked to have a stiff enough task, so this was a good effort.
Jamboretta, representing the Echelon team, was held up and never looked all that happy, although she still finished close up without having as hard a race as some.
Last year's second Bahia Breeze dropped out after chasing the winner, and she was well below form this time.
Barshiba can look a difficult ride on the most conventional of tracks, so no surprise perhaps that she was never happy here.
Gerard Butler reported that Baharah was unsuited by the track. (GD)
