Experience of a similar track and a low draw has proven the formula in recent years and so it proved again with SMOKEY STORM having both and a ready aptitude for the track.
He is a chunky youngster, who handled both Brighton and Goodwood well in races that have worked out nicely for early-season contests. He was a ready winner, having to sit and suffer around the bend in a pocket just off the pace which eased into the bend after a frantic start. He dived through the gap left against the inside rail to put the race to bed into the final furlong, full value for the clear margin. He maintains a progressive profile and the good start made by his sire One Cool Cat.
Connections do not see him as a Royal Ascot contender and are eyeing a Group 2 at the Curragh instead. He has had his early season glory and whilethe form is solid enough, he is likely to follow many winners in struggling against scopier Group-race sorts as the season progresses, limiting his opportunities having bagged a Listed contest.
Indian Art, a taller more scopey colt, had a poor draw and was outpaced and uneasy on the track despite his Goodwood win before pulled wide midtrack to leveller ground in the straight, he stayed on steadily without seeing which way the winner went. He can improve on the bare form back on a conventional track.
Able Master, who was enthusiastic to post, was keen to get on with it in the early dash but had to be niggled along to get to Mazzola halfway up the straight. He was far from disgraced under his 5lb penalty but looks a speedball by nature.
Mazzola is all about speed and showed it but struggled through the final 100 yards and is another who looks a speedball.
Full Of Nature was disappointing, never threatening to take a hand against the colts.
Fivefootnumberone was another uneasy on the track and he did not impress over this extra furlong.
Grand Honour ran well to a point but did not impress as staying this extra furlong.
Our Wee Girl palpably failed to handle the track after breaking slowly and sitting last. She was pulled widest midtrack but still lurched all the way up the straight while making a bit of ground midway up the straight until the unequal struggle was accepted. She is a deal better than the bare form.
Ritzy Wildcat tore off too keenly to give himself a chance.
Our Wee Girl and Grand Honour were officially reported not to have handled the track.
Mazzola's rider reported his mount hung both ways in the closing stages while Ritzy Wildcat was reported to have run too free. (BJ)
