The two withdrawals notably weakened this handicap, particularly the absence of the unbeaten Musaalem, and left it far from competitive for the money, nor was it run at better than a steady pace.COMPTON'S ELEVEN had been taken off his feet over 6f on his previous start but had run a good second over 7f before that and proved suited by this step back up in trip, leading well over a furlong out and just holding on in a tight finish. He has had a low strike-rate of late but is in decent heart - though a 50-1 quote from Paddy Power for the Wokingham (under a 5lb penalty) back over 6f at Royal Ascot does not look particularly generous.

Last month's Newmarket winner King's Bastion confirmed himself in good form with a fine effort off a 5lb higher mark, just failing to catch the winner, while Carnivore deserves credit for an encouraging first run of the year, switched right over a furlong out and running on well to grab a close third late on - he is well worth keeping an eye on next time.

Most eyecatching of the rest was the reappearing Musical Beat, who was slowly away but soon recovered and came through to hold every chance on the outside of the field over a furlong out, only for her exertions to tell late on. This testing 7f on a softish surface would not have been ideal for her and the effort suggests strongly that she retains her ability - she could well be eased a pound or two by the handicapper and is well worth looking out for on an easier track with firmer underfoot conditions.

Big Noise was one of the few seemingly on the upgrade but he was disappointing and never threatened to get involved.
